What Is Dysport? Treatments, Cost, and More

Dysport

According to the Aesthetic Society, in 2021, Americans spent over $3 billion on non-surgical cosmetic procedures like neurotoxin injectables. Although Botox is still a very popular choice, there is another type of injectable that more people are choosing: Dysport.

Dysport injections can help reduce signs of aging like wrinkles and fine lines without requiring invasive procedures. So what is Dysport? Keep reading to know more about what this injectable can treat and what the procedure is like.

What Are Dysport Injections?

Dysport, like Botox, is a cosmetic injectable made from botulinum toxin type A. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by interrupting the signals your brain sends to muscles that tell them to contract. By cutting off these signals, the muscles become softer, diminishing and even removing wrinkles.

Dysport has FDA approval to treat the appearance of glabellar lines, which are the lines that form between your eyebrows when you frown or squint. As you age and your skin loses some of its elasticity, these lines can remain in place even when your face is at rest.

Dysport can treat:

  • Glabellar lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines
  • Frown lines

The best candidates for Dysport treatment are people in generally good health who are 18 or older and worry about the development of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are the creases and fine lines that expressions like smiling and frowning create.

For people who are taking medications for muscle spasms, are pregnant or nursing, or have milk allergies, we will look for alternative treatments.

Dysport vs. Botox

Although Dysport and Botox contain the same main ingredient, botulinum type A, there are differences between the two types of injectables.

Dysport’s formula can spread a bit more than Botox’s, so it can be a good choice for larger treatment areas. Dysport is also more diluted than Botox, which also helps when treating larger areas like the forehead. The effects of Dysport tend to appear faster than Botox, too.

Benefits of Dysport Treatment

Regular Dysport treatment sessions can teach the treated muscles how to contract less forcefully, which helps prevent new wrinkles from forming. Younger people are choosing these injections as a preventative cosmetic treatment for this reason.

Because Dysport injections are minimally invasive, the procedure requires no downtime. You can get the injections done during your lunch break and then return right back to work.

Another benefit Dysport offers is that it can last up to four months. Many of our patients say that Dysport lasts a bit longer than Botox.

Preparing for Dysport Injections

Before scheduling an appointment for Dysport injections, we will meet for a consultation. We will evaluate the treatment areas and take a full medical history to ensure this is the best procedure for you. Let us know if you are taking any medications, have had cosmetic injectables or other similar procedures in the past, or have any allergies.

During the consultation, we will also discuss the number of Dysport units we will use and how much the entire procedure will cost. At our med spa, we charge a reasonable amount per unit of Dysport.

We recommend that our patients stop using blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen, but speak with your general practitioner about this before you stop taking any prescribed medications.

We also recommend you do not drink alcohol, especially wine, at least 48 hours before your Dysport appointment. You also do not want to schedule facial massages or laser treatments right before or after the injections.

The Dysport Procedure

Come to the appointment with a clean face. Some people choose to apply an ice pack to the treatment area prior to the injections, but we will also use a numbing cream before the procedure.

Once the cream has numbed the treatment areas, we will begin injecting Dysport. Because Dysport is more diluted than Botox, you can expect to need multiple injections.

Dysport Aftercare

You can return to your life as soon as the appointment is over. We do ask that you avoid strenuous exercise, very hot environments, or massaging or scratching at the treatment areas because this can displace the solution. We also recommend you keep your head upright that first night.

Wash your face gently for the first few days, and avoid abrasive skincare products. We recommend you wear sunscreen, even if the day is cloudy, and that you do not drink alcohol for at least 24 hours after the injections.

It is also a good idea to set up your next appointment to avoid any gaps between treatments.

After the injections, you can expect to see results within 24 to 48 hours. Typically, you can see the final results of Dysport within about a week. These results will last three to four months.

To help the treatment last as long as possible, remember to always wear sunscreen because direct sunlight can break down Dysport. You should also moisturize your skin daily and reduce your intake of foods and drinks with high sugar levels.
